HANAMIYA

HANAMIYA, a boutique accommodation that opened in Kyoto in 2026.

Situated between the Kamo River—the source of Kyoto's abundant waters—and the Takase River, a historic canal that once sustained daily life in the city, the project reinterprets the wisdom of the traditional Kyoto townhouse (Kyo-machiya) for contemporary living. Rather than treating the surrounding landscape as shakkei (borrowed scenery), nature is elevated to become the defining element of the spatial experience.

A carefully curated selection of Kyoto's traditional crafts—including lacquerware, dyed and woven textiles, ceramics, and karakami decorative paper—has been integrated throughout the interiors. The design places particular emphasis on the guest's subjective experience: the tactile quality of materials, the eye level from a seated position, and the ever-changing scenery framed beyond the space, creating an environment that unfolds through the passage of time.
