Established in the late Edo period, Hiyoshiya, the only long-standing manufacturer of Japanese umbrellas (wagasa) in Kyoto, developed the KOTORI series of interior lighting in 2006 using traditional techniques based on the principle of tradition being a series of innovations.
The innovative idea of allowing the frame to open and close like a Japanese umbrella, the intricate bamboo frame, and the elegant light that filters through the washi paper have garnered support from customers in Japan and abroad, and have been used in numerous projects, including residential, commercial, and lodging facilities.
The effort to transform the Kyoto wagasa into interior lighting has become widely known as a case study of creating new value by creating a stir in the world of traditional crafts.
The innovations made possible with wagasa can also be made in the fields of bamboo, Japanese paper, lacquer, ceramics, textiles, dyeing, and many other traditional crafts which Japan is proud to offer the world.

From the Kyoto Minami IC on the Meishin Expressway, drive north on Route 1 to Horikawa-dori, go west at Horikawa-Imadegawa intersection, and go north on Imadegawa Omiya.
