It has a distinctive fragrance and is well known as Kiso Hinoki, also referred to as Bishū Hinoki.
The name Hinoki is said to come from the ancient practice of creating fire by rubbing pieces of this wood together.
In English, it is commonly known as Japanese Cypress.
